Chihuahuas puppies, as with most small breed dogs, are extremely susceptible to becoming hypoglycemic very quickly. Hypoglycemia is caused when a puppy has gone for too long without food. To help prevent hypoglycemia you should mix a small amount of sugar into your puppies drinking water which must be available at all times. Here are some common signs that your puppy is hypoglycemic:
· Muscular twitching
· Unusual behavior
· Dilated pupils
· Loss of Appetite
If your puppy seems to be suffering from Hypoglycemia, the best method to help them is to offer some sugar water or Karo syrup. The best way to administer this if the puppy is not willing to drink on its own is through a syringe. Administer slowly so as not to choke the puppy. If this occurs please call your veterinarian and inform them of the symptoms that your puppy is suffering from.
